John is shown in the 1901 census, the youngest of the four sons of John (42) and Catherine (36); those four being Allan (14), Murdo (12), Donald (8) and John (6).

His brother Murdo served in the RNR, but was prisoner-of-war from Antwerp (October 1914) until the Armistice. His brother Donald served in the Seaforth Highlanders and survived the war, as did his brother Allan, who served in the Merchant Navy.
