Donald appears in the 1901 census, aged 12, at the house of his grandparents at 27 New Street, Lionel. Also present are his parents John (41) and Annie (38) as well as his siblings Donald (10), Henrietta, (8), John (6), Mary (4) and Annie (4 months).
His brother John was lost in May 1917 whilst serving in the Merchant Navy.
