Angus is shown in the 1891 census aged 6, at a crofters private house in Port, with his parents Angus (31) and Christina (30) as well as his younger siblings Isabella (5), Mary (3) and Roderick (1).

His brother Roderick served in the Merchant Navy and survived the war. He was awarded money for meritorious services in the Mediterranean when his ship was torpedoed.
