Donald is shown in the 1901 census as a 6-year old scholar at 20 Habost, Ness, the son of Donald (45) and Annie (40) and brother to Annie (14), John (9), Mary (7), Norman (4), Roderick (4), Catherine (2) and Neil (3 months).
His brothers Neil and Roderick served in the Trawler Section of the RNR; his brother Norman was in the Seaforth Highlanders. These three all survived the war.
