We find Evander, aged 17, in the 1891 census as a fisherman in Tolsta (derived through enumeration district 25). He is the eldest son of John and "Mayant" (probably a corrupt rendition of Margaret), both aged 40. Their other children were Donald (15), John (13), Angus (11), George (9), Murdo (7) and Christina (7).
His brothers Murdo and George also served in the RNR, but survived the war.
