Stornoway Gazette, 1917
Lance-corporal Peter Macaulay, Seaforths, eldest son of Mr John Macaulay, 13 Sheshader, was killed in action on 23 April 1917. The deceased soldier, aged 25, joined the army 6 years ago and was in India when war began. He arrived in France with the first contingent from India in October 1914. He was at home for 6 weeks in the spring of 1915 with frostbite in both feet. Returning to the fighting line, he was wounded in both hands last June, necessitating a spell in hospital in Glasgow until recovery. Of an active and restless disposition and eager to be back in the fray, he volunteered to return to France, as soon as he recovered, and had been in the thick of the fighting until his death. His brother Murdo is in the Royal Scots, having been transferred to that regiment from the Seaforths. Another brother, Donald is in the RNR. Captain Hamilton-Harris, writing Lance-corporal Macaulay's mother, says:

"It is with profound regret I have to inform you of the death of your son, Lance-corporal Peter Macaulay in action. We were suddenly ordered to support another regiment which had attacked and carried a German grench in the morning of the 23rd April. The company came under extremely heavy shellfire, and your son fell with several other of his comrades. It will be some very slight consolation to you to know that he suffered no pain whatever. Your boy was a splendid soldier and a great support to his platoon. His loss is felt greatly in the company. The officers, NCO's and men of the company desire me on their behalf to tender their deepest sympathy to you during this great bereavement and pray that Almighty God in his tenderness and mercy will be with you, and help you to bear the great burden of sorrow so suddenly cast upon you".
His poor mother was about to send her dear boy the following lines, when the sorrowful news of his death arrived:

Brave son of mine!
As you fulfill
Your duty to your Land and King
My thoughts each hour are with you still
My love is yours through everything!
Hope on - as I do - day by day
Hope on, amid the battle's roar
Till comes the end for which we pray
And "Peace with Honour" rules once more.

Mr John Macaulay, 16 Shader, Point, has received official notice that his son, Pte Murdo Macaulay, Canadians, was killed in action on 11th November 1917. The deceased soldier, who was 29 years of age, emigrated to Canada six years ago, arrived in Britain in August 1916, and two months later crossed in France. What adds to his parents' distress is the fact that a few days before his death, he had received a pass for home, but owing to an official mistake it had to be returned to headquarters for correction. In the interval the fatal engagement took place. His brother Donald is serving with the Naval forces. The deep sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved parents, who have lost a most dutiful son. His cousin, Malcolm Macaulay, Canadians, writing the bereaved parents, says: "It grieves me beyond expression to have to write you concerning my dear cousin, your son Murdo. No doubt by this time you have been notified by the War Office that he was killed in action on the 11th November. As soon as I heard the sad news I made my way to the vicinity and found that he and three of his comrades had unfortunately been killed by shrapnel. I, along with some other comrades, buried them with full honours, thus rendering our last assistence on earth. He was dearly loved by all that knew him and his death is regretted by all in his company. He was always mentioned as cool and courageous to face the foe. I know, dear aunt, that this is a terrible blow, and anything I can say or do will seem as a drop in the bucket during this, your time of sorrow. I can only commend you to Him who healeth all wounded hearts and strengthens us to bear with our burdens. We believe that we are fighting for a just cause. Therefore we claim the blessed promise. "He that loseth his life for My sake shall find it".

Stornoway Gazette, 1917
We regret to learn that Pte Norman Macdonald, Gordon Highlanders, son of Norman Macdonald, 4 Portvoller, was killed in action on 27 April 1917. Deceased, aged only 19, enlisted a year last August and has been at the front the past 12 months. His father and younger brother are serving in the Royal Navy. Two years ago, his uncle, Sgt Donald Macdonald, fell at Hill 60.

In a later edition, the Gazette writes:
Particulars of the death of private Norman Macdonald, Gordons , son of Malcolm Macdonald, 4 Portvoller, are now to hand. Writing to the late soldier's mother, Sergt. Matheson says:
The Gordon Highlanders have had much hard fighting since the beginning of this great offensive, and although we have proved ourselves full of the fighting spirit, as the men from the North of Scotland always did, we have suffered severe casualties and many a brave Highland soldier now lies peacefully in his everlasting rest. It was when we went into action about the beginning of May in face of terrific shell fire that your son Malcolm was struck. I saw him getting wounded about 4pm, and as the only other Lewis lad in his company I though it my duty to dress him up as best I could, and help to get him attended to as soon as possible. He spoke Gaelic to me all the time and I tried to cheer him up. At nightfall the stretcherbearers bore him from the trenches and he was still smiling. But alas! his wounds were too severe and it was with deep regret I heard of his death the following day. He was greatly admired by everyone and he and I were great friends. I came from Uig and he from Point and we had many a conversation in Gaelic. His body was decently buried in the little village of Filloy well behind the firing line and a cross marks his grave. I can assure you his death came as a shock to me, but what must be the anguish of the heart of the mother who lost her son. Accept my most sincere sympathy in your sore bereavement.

Was in command of Torpedo Boat 027 at outbreak of war, afterwards served on the destroyer Milne. Shortly before his death was appointed to another destroyer, which was mined in the North Sea on the above date.

Stornoway Gazette, 31 August 1917
Donald Macdonald, Warrant Officer, RN, whose home was in Sheerness, lost his life in the destroyer recently reported as mined in the North Sea. He was born in Portnaguran about 40 years ago, and was the second of four sons who, in early childhood, lost both father and mother. Their father was one of the crew of a fishing boat which foundered with all on board during a gale. Their mother never recovered from the shock and passed away a few months thereafter. The boys, reared by near relatives, grew up to sturdy, handsome manhood.

Donald joined the Royal Navy as a boy and by steady perseverance and strict attention to duty hee rose to the rank of Warrant Officer. He had specialised in torpedo work and was chief gunnery officer in charge of torpedoes on his ship. His ship paid a flying visit to Stornoway in the early stages of the war. He was greatly esteemed and respected by the people of Point, who were proud of the young man who had risen to such a high position in the Royal Navy, and the sorrow for his untimely fate is deep and sincere. He continued to take a lively interest in the people and affairs of his native district. On the occasion of King George's Coronation he sent his old teacher £5 to provide a treat to the pupils of his old school. The occasion will never be forgotten by the four hundred pupils who, marching in procession with flags flying and headed by a piper, proceeded to a picturesque spot near the sea where they held their sports. The late officer was married to an English lady who and their infant son now mourn the husband and father who died at the post of duty in the service of King and country.

Murdo, the older brother, and ex-Life Guardsman, who had seen action in South Africa, volunteered at the outbreak of war and joined the Royal Bucks Hussars. He was so seriously wounded about two years ago that he has not yet recovered his wonted health and strength.

The third brother, Roderick, saw service as a Seaforth Highlander in Egypt and South Africa. He is now serving as a seaman on one of HM ships. The fourth brother, Donald (jnr) is a carpenter in one of the royal dockyards.

Stornoway Gazette, 6 September 1917

Donald Macdonald, Warrant Officer, RN, a native of Portnaguran, was killed on board a destroyer recently reported as mined in the North Sea. We cull the following particulars regarding his career from the columns of the "Guardian", Sheerness where he had his home.

Mr Macdonald, RN, who was killed a fortnight ago when serving his country at sea was well known in the Nore command. He was appointed ot the Actaeon, torpedo school ship, on 6 April 1912, for service in the special service vessel Biter, which was under his command. Mr Macdonald, who held a navigation certificate as well as being a torpedo gunner, was held in the highest esteem by all who were associated with him on the Actaeon and her tenders. He had previously don duty in the Nore command in the year 1911 when he had been stationed at Chatham in the light cruiser Hyacinth, then out of commission. After leaving the Biter, he was appointed to command Torpedo-boat 027, which at the time was serving at Portsmouth as tender to the Racer, the sloop employed on duties in connection with the Royal Naval College at Osborne. He joined No 027 on 20 May 1914, and was in command of her when war was declared. The last Navy List published with information concerning ships showed him to be serving on the destroyer Milne, to which he was appointed on 9 November 1914 before her delivery from the works of Messrs J. Brown and Co Ltd, Clydebank. He left that vessel to take up an appointment in another of HM vessels some time before his death. All through his career, Mr Macdonald had been recognised as a serious and hardworking officer, and the letters of sympathy which his widow has received from officers of the vessel on whose books he was borned when he met his death indicate their high appreciation of him personally and of his services. The Navy has lost another valuable warrant officer by his death.

Garrabost Soldier's Death
Of all those from this township who took partin the early stages of the cruel struggle in France, there is now none left without being either wounded, killed or prisoners. Of the many sore bereavements arising in connection with the war, perhaps the hardest are the cases of those widows left to mourn the loss of an only son. Sad to say, we have many such cases to-day in Lewis. One of these is Widow Christina Campbell, daughter of Mr Torquil Macleod, No 8 Garrabost. At the beginning of the war her only son, Donald, joined hte regiment, the 1st Gordon Highlanders. He continued to take part in the many feats of that gallant regiment until he was wounded on the 25th November, 1914. Recovering from his wound, he soon rejoined. Though he spent two winters in the trenches, it was in the latter end of March he contracted a severe cold, which developed into pheumonia. He died in the first week of April, int eh 20th General Hospital, in his 24th year. Dr Clayton, in writing to his mother, says: -"As the doctor who looked after your boy before he died, I feel I should like to tell you what a splendid fellow I thought him. He had rather a distressing illness, which made him very breathless, but his cheerful patience was wonderful. I shall never forget his smile, and his courage during those last edays. You have lost a real good boy, and I am very sorry indeed for you, and I hope this small testimony of mine may comfort you a little." His nurse, Miss Annabel Macleod, a nitve of Kershader, Lochs, speaks in high terms of the Christian patience and resignation with which Donald Campbell bore his distressing illenss. He was very much respected in his native township as a kind and warm-hearted young man, and as the weeks pass by, he will be sorely missed, not only by his own relatives, but by his acquaintances in his native village.

Mr Kenneth Mackay, Free Church Elder, Garrabost, has received official intimation that his son, Alexander Mackay, leading seaman RNR, was killed when his ship was blown up through striking a mine in the Irish Channel on 22 May 1917. For the past two years he had been doing patrol duty in the Channel, with Holyhead as a base. At the outbreak of war he was in Canada, and came over with the first batch of Naval Reservists in answer to the mobilisation summons. Deepest sympathy is extended to his widow (who herself is in a delicate state of health) and her child; also to his father, who within a year has lost his wife and son. A son and step-son also died in Canada within six months of each other some years ago. Mrs Mackay has received the following letter from the Rear-Admiral in command at Holyhead:

"Dear Mrs Mackay,
No doubt you have already received from the Admiralty the sad news of the death of your husband. On behalf of the officers and men attached to this Base, I beg to offer you our deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement. A memorial service was held here yesterday, which was attended by all the officers and men and a great many of the local inhabitants".
